Hiking on the tracks of salt in Altaussee
The area surrounding Sandling mountain, the salt mountain of Altaussee, is rich in forests and as far as one can think it has been all about the “white gold”. Via Salis takes you on a fascinating journey in time, back to the time of the Romans, the powerful salt lords of the Middle Ages to the modern salt mining of today. The loop trail (7km/3hrs/300m of altitude difference) leads through the picturesque highlands landscape. Along the trail there are 22 informative panels on old entrances to tunnels, Roman trade routes, castle ruins and little known sights. At the end of the trail you can enjoy a journey into the depths of the salt mountain and a tour of the literature, local heritage and salt museum at the Altaussee Salt Worlds.
