Customs in the Ausseerland – Salzkammergut Area

The history of alpine customs has always been closely connected to the year’s calendar.

Ausseer Flinserl

“Flinserl” are the spring figures of the Ausseer carnival.

Drumming Wives

Men dressed in snow-white nightdresses and nightcaps have their appearance on Carnival Monday and Shrove Tuesday from 8.00 p.m. onwards, when they play their drums and other instruments with ear-splitting noise.

"Folk Music is the Dialect of the Soul "

Just like a dialect cannot be learnt from a book, folk music can only be learnt where it comes from and is actively cultivated by the population.

Silk Hand Printing

Just like dirndl dresses are part of the Ausseerland area, silk scarves and aprons are part of dirndl dresses.

An Island of Traditional Costumes

Wearing dirndl dresses and lederhosen is part of daily life in the Ausseerland-Salzkammergut area.

“Meisterstrasse” Craftsmen’s Trail
