Drumming Wives

Men dressed in snow-white nightdresses and nightcaps have their appearance on Carnival Monday and Shrove Tuesday from 8.00 p.m. onwards, when they play their drums and other instruments with ear-splitting noise.

“Proper men” in women’s nightdresses of the last centuries try to drive out winter time with their drums and trumpets. In earlier times one believed that natural forces like winter can be driven out with noise. On Carnival Monday the drumming wives parade through the village to the melody of the Ausseer Carnival March. The melody’s rhythm can be heard everywhere in the Ausseerland area during the three “holy” carnival days.
