"Folk Music is the Dialect of the Soul "

Just like a dialect cannot be learnt from a book, folk music can only be learnt where it comes from and is actively cultivated by the population.

There is no proper or authentic folk music as such, but a great variety of local variations.
The Ausseer folk music is part of the alpine folk music culture. Like everywhere in the Salzkammergut area yodellers, landler and “Steirer” have been preserved in their original form. In the Ausseerland they have a distinctive Styrian character.
Most handed-down songs are dance music – it’s most important form is violin music.

With the customs of the “Schützen” historical defence corps the flute and drum music was handed down.
The Ausseer folk music has been acknowledged by important politicians and scientists since Biedermeier time. This has contributed to the fact that it has been thoroughly researched and is still alive today.
